- On Tuesday last an inquest was held before John Becke Esq at Northampton General Infirmary, on the body of John Wykes, a boy nine years of age who came by his death under the following distressing circumstances. It appeared that the deceased, who was a remarkably industrious boy, had been at work at Spratton where he lived with his parents, for a farmer named Cotton. On Monday morning last, owing to a severe frost the boy could not resume his usual employment, being anxious to obtain some work, he went to a farmer named Pearson, who told him the threshing machine was at work, and he might assist in untying the sheaves for the feeder. He immediately did so and about ten minutes after they resumed work after lunch the poor little boy slipped and his right leg was drawn into the drum. The machine was immediately stopped but the boy was so wedged in that the drum had to be lowered ere he could be extracted. He was taken home immediately, a conveyance was obtained and he was taken to the Infirmary where he gradually sank and died the same evening. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death. [1]
