Great great grandmother of George Washington, first President of the United States. Moved to Tring on her marriage, bore 6 children: Elizabeth Washington, b Tring 1627-36, William Washington 1627, d Tring 1641, Martha Washington b.1627c, John Washington, b Sulgrave 1633 [George Washington line], Lawrence Washington b.1635, d 1657 in Virginia and one other.
John and Lawrence left for American colonies 1657. John acquired 5000 acres at confluence of Potomac river and Little Hunting Creek in partnership with Col Nicholas Spencer. John's share was later named Mount Vernon.
A considerable inheritance from the William Twigden line.
(How is it that she bore 3 children with surname Washington, borne in Tring, before her very late marriage at 30 in 1933? All apparently reported in several sournces. Surely marriage was earlier, the Essex cereomony being a form of blessing? or were they borne in Tring out of wedlock & they married in 1633 when he, having been ordained, was appointed Rector of Purleigh?) | TWIGDEN, AMPHYLLIS (I3943)
