Started with tenancy of farmland in lower part of Spratton. In 1925 accepted 10 year tenancy of Spratton Grange Farm to which he moved with his family. No 11 Yew Tree Lane was then let to the Copson family until 1935, who kept poultry. 1935 saw return of Hammonds to this cottage following the national difficulties in farming, In 1936 however he took the tenancy of Vicarage Farm (including the 5 1/2 acres between Church Street and Welford Road) which was held until his death in 1962.
